My friend is the one who sent him the release — she’s had dealings with him before. I left it to her discretion whether or not to tell him he’s an idiot. I also refused to identify him — as I said before, what he did was not illegal; however, the curious can easily find out who he is.

Sloppy. Unethical. And, potentially ignorant. However, if you challenged this "writer" on the incident he/she would likely reply: "Hell, you wanted publicity and you got it; what's your problem?" It's really unfortunate. A simple "In a news releases issued yesterday" intro would have avert this theft of your material.
